Deciding when to open an inground pool is similar to deciding when to bring your tomato plants outdoors or when to pull the barbecue grill out of storage. Your local climate will play a big part in whether you’ve made the right decision, but there’s never a one size fits all answer. Deciding on a specific date each year can be as tough as predicting how much rainfall you’ll have each spring. There are a variety of factors to consider when it comes to opening your pool and we’ll try and cover of all them in this article.
Warm Weather Promotes Algae
Algae is the bane of all pool owners. Allowing algae to grow in your pool can put it out of commission for weeks while you try and clean it out and get all the levels back in order. If the weather is already warm and you still haven’t opened your pool, you’re likely just creating a breeding ground for algae. Once the outdoor temperature is consistently the same as room temperature you should consider opening your pool. Waiting longer than that could set you back while you tend to your algae problem.
Beat the Pollen Drop
Pollen falling into a non-circulating pool is only going to cause you problems when it comes time to open it up. If you can get your pool up and running before the majority of the pollen drops your filtering system will take of things. If you wait too long your filters will be overworked and you’ll have to come up with a more labour intensive method to get the water clean.
Calculating Expenses
Some people feel that running a pool that isn’t being used is too expensive. Sure, your pool is costing you money once it’s up and running but treating water that’s full of algae and pollen can end up costing you even more in the long run once you factor in labour and chemicals. Besides, once the pool is running, it’s ready for use as soon as that first hot day comes along. You don’t want to be at the end of an early heatwave when you finally get your pool open.
Usher in The Summer
As mentioned in the last point, there’s nothing worse than staring at a non-functioning pool when the warm weather has already arrived. Why not help usher in the very beginning of summer by having your pool ready to go as soon as it arrives? If you take care of the technical maintenance before the warm weather hits, you’ll be frolicking in the waters for the entire length of the summer.
