How to Design a Backyard Pool

Once you decide to install a swimming pool in your backyard you’ll have to start answering some practical questions. Where will you put the pool? What kind of shape will it be? What about the surrounding structures and vegetation? All these questions and more will need to be answered while you figure out how to design a backyard pool. To help you get your thinking on track we’ve come up with some suggestions of what you should be mindful of during the planning stages of your new pool.

Who Will Be Using Your Pool?

By first determining how your pool will be used and by whom you’ll be able to answer many of your subsequent questions a lot easier. The design of a backyard pool used by a competitive swimmer will be much different than one that’s used by a family with several small children. If you’re retired and simply want a place to relax, your backyard will likely have a different design compared with someone who plans to throw pool parties every summer. Who will be using your pool and what they’re using it for will dictate many of the design elements of your new installation.

How Big Is Your Backyard?

The size, shape and topography of the area that the pool will be installed in is the next consideration when it comes to planning and design. How things are laid out will be very different If you have massive amounts of room compared if you have a small space to work with. If your backyard has a hill or slope you might need to use some creativity to properly fit a pool into the area. After the type of use your pool will get, the type of backyard you have will influence how things are laid out.

How Do You Envision the Surrounding Area?

Choosing a style of pool is one thing, but the design of the space surrounding the pool will really give your backyard its character. After all the pool is just a container to hold a large amount of water. What surrounds it will determine how the space is used, how it looks and how it invites the pool users to interact with the entire area. Just think of the difference of a space designed for family barbecues and get togethers compared to one created for privacy and solitude. Some people may want something completely functional whereas others would rather have something that makes a bold fashion statement. What type of concept appeals most to you?

Use Your Pool for Inspiration

There are many different types of pools available and until you’ve chosen one it’ll be hard to figure out what works best around it. Your design possibilities are much different with a long and narrow lap pool than they are with a large kidney shaped tank that follows along the property boundaries. Once you’ve settled on a specific type of pool your choice your design elements will begin to (thankfully!) narrow.
