Whether you do it now or a bit later, opening the pool is a sure sign that summer fun is near at hand and that’s something the whole family can look forward to. If you covered the pool and protected the pump last fall, opening day should be a reasonably simple process.
Here’s how to get your pool ready for summer in six easy steps.
Step 1 – Remove Leaves and Other Debris
Before removing the pool cover, be sure to get rid of any leaves and dirt on and around the pool. Use a pump to remove any standing water on top of the cover so it doesn’t end up in the pool.
Step 2 – Remove the Pool Cover
After the pool cover has been removed, take the time to clean and dry it before storage. Spread it out and hose it down with the highest pressure your hose allows. Let the cover dry and, before folding it, sprinkle a light layer of talcum powder over it. The talcum powder will prevent the cover from sticking together during storage. Pool covers are best stored in a cool place.
Step 3 – Check the Water Level
For proper circulation, the water level needs to be in the middle of the skimmer opening. If necessary, add water. While you’re waiting for the pool to fill, test all handrails, ladders, diving boards and slides for loose bolts or other unsafe conditions.
Step 4 – Inspect Equipment
Make sure that all equipment – hoses, pumps and filters – are in working order according to manufacturer’s guidelines. Then start the circulation system and allow it to run for eight to 12 hours.
Step 5 – Check the pH Levels
After the water has been circulated for eight to 12 hours, check your pool’s pH level, total alkalinity, hardness of the water and so on. Fill the test tube from you pH kit with water obtained from at least 18 inches below the surface, making sure to collect the sample away from the pump inlet.
Add the appropriate amount of agent, cap the tube and shake. Don’t cover the tube with your finger because oils from your hand can affect the test results. Add chemicals in the proper order to balance the water.
Step 6 – Check Supplies and Safety Measures
Be sure to check all safety items related to the pool. Ensure you have the following:
- A fully-stocked first aid kit within easy reach
- Cleaning equipment in good working order
- Gate latch that works properly to prevent accidental access when you’re away
These few simple steps will ensure that you and your family will have a safe and happy summer enjoying your backyard pool.
