Celebrate Canada Day around the Pool

No country is perfect but Canada comes pretty close. It’s simply a great place to live. So, on Canada’s birthday, we celebrate this wonderful land we call home with parades and fairs. Whatever your town or city has planned, you can be sure there will be a lot to see and do.

After a long day of walking around the Harbourfront Center, you and your family will come home tired and hot. Now is the time to cool off and relax in the backyard pool. Maybe you will invite a few friends or relations over for a dip and some refreshments.

Here’s how to celebrate Canada Day around the pool.

Keep it Simple

Don’t stress over decorations and food. Here are a few suggestions, many you can do the day before:

  • Dollar stores have large Canadian flags. Tack one to the fence behind the refreshment table.
  • Cover the refreshment table with a red and white table cloth and stock it with snacks like watermelon slices and vegetable and dip trays.
  • Put out sodas, lemonade, flavoured carbonated water and plain bottled water while people are swimming. Save the alcohol for when everyone is finished swimming.
  • Hang red and white balloons with small Canadian flags around the yard.
  • Make a playlist of Canadian singers like Shania Twain, Celine Dion and Stompin’ Tom Connors who wrote songs about many places in Canada.
  • Float red and white candles in a birdbath or large tub and use red and white candles on the table(s) where people will sit to eat.
  • Food needn’t be fancy. Simple fare like potato salad, hot dogs and hamburgers are perfect for a picnic atmosphere and don’t require a lot of prep time.
  • Provide extra towels and waterproof sunscreen for those who may have forgotten theirs at home.
  • For the Kids

While at the dollar store, pick up some new toys, like water pistols or inflatable pool rings, for the kids. Always be sure to have an adult supervise whenever children are in the pool or around the pool area. A plastic wading pool full of sand, seashells and beach toys is also a popular idea that will help to keep the kids occupied.
