Not all pool builders are the same. This guide to finding a dependable pool builder will help you to separate the competent and trustworthy pool contractors from the rest, so you can make the best possible decision about who to hire to make your dream come true.
You need to be able to trust the builder you’re talking to. Interview prospective builders in person or over the phone and ask them a series of questions to determine the stability of their business, their technical competence, their credibility and their commitment to customer satisfaction.
Is There a Showroom?
An established pool contractor will have a showroom and be well-established with strong ties in the neighbourhood. A showroom lets you see the builder’s products, observe his operations and meet some of the employees. This type of builder is more likely to have the finances to take care of things if there happens to be a problem with your pool.
Years in Business
The pool builder you choose should be able to tell you how many years they’ve been in business under the same name. The longer they’ve been in business, the better your chances of having your pool completed without undue complications.Unscrupulous pool builders may go bankrupt, leaving pools unfinished, then turn around and open a new company with a new name. If a pool company goes out of business your pool warranty disappears, too. It’s best to choose a pool builder who’s been in business for ten years or more.
Get References
You should be able to obtain a list of names from the pool builder of people they’ve completed pools for. A short list may mean that the builder either hasn’t built many pools or he’s had trouble satisfying his customers. Talk to at least five people randomly. You may even be able to see the finished pools, as well as getting feedback from the homeowners.
Check Their Credit Rating
An upstanding pool company will have no problem sharing their credit history with you. A bad payment history is a clear warning that you should avoid the company in question.
Workmen’s Comp and Liability Insurance
A pool company should have both Workmen’s Compensation insurance to protect you from having to pay for subcontractors’ lost wages and a General Liability policy to protect you from lawsuits and other obligations to labourers. A professional pool builder will have both and will be happy to give you the phone number of his insurance company so you can get a copy of the policy.
Contract Inclusions
You’ll want to be sure that all of the necessary work for the pool is included in your contract. It’s possible for a pool builder to hit rock while digging your pool and you’ll want to know how this will be handled ahead of time. It’s important that the agreement related to hitting rock or water, electrical work, etc., is clearly spelled out and that you understand the agreement fully.
Firm Up the Price
Dozens of factors impact the cost of a pool and an ethical builder will never quote you a price without a yard survey and a specific design for your yard. Any pool builder that offers you an artificially low price just to persuade you to let a salesman come to your home should be avoided.
